Farm update March 2025: The farm is waking up!

Every year at the beginning of the year I take a step back and look back at the previous year. I look at any wins (hopefully there are some), break down and evaluate any failures or losses (there is always something that doesn't work out right or needs improvements). In my year end email I talked about how 2024 went and what I learned. Over the past few months at the farmers markets I have talked to several people and I have listened to their questions and comments. You guys have given me SOOO much to think about and pray about.

One of the things that I am going to change, or I guess add, is that instead of sending out monthly emails that hold all of my farm updates, I will let you guys know that the updates are available here in my Farm Updates blog. I want to present my updates to you like this so that all of the updates will be in one place that is easily acceptable. I love the idea that we will one day be able to look back and see the progression of the farm, see how it has grown and see what has worked and what hasn't worked. I want to be open with you guys and I would love to one day turn this farm into a place that people can come to to learn and grow.

This is my first year growing dahlias from the tubers, and some of them survived the winter!
This is my first year growing dahlias from the tubers, and some of them survived the winter!

The months of January and February were months where not much was happening other than starting seeds and keeping the lavender cuttings alive. But once the snow and cold eased up and it warmed up things could really get started. There was a huge pile of manure/compost that we was able to haul out to the farm, spread out and tilled in. I can't even begin to tell you how glad I am to see that pile gone.

Last year I had planned to get my spring flowers in the ground in late January/early February, but yeah that didn't happen. So I am officially several weeks to a couple months behind, shocker I know it's the story of my life. But I am proud to say that I have officially got flowers in the ground! It warmed up enough that I pulled my lavender out of the greenhouse and I have the room to get more flower seeds started (once again late, but oh well).

My plan for this year to to focus on focal flowers more than a whole array of flowers to make mixed bouquets and I am determined to learn how to grow, propagate and create new dahlias. Last year I started dahlias from seed and I dug up the tubers for winter storage. Now I am working on waking up those tubers so that I can increase my stock by getting cuttings off those tubers. I have had some successes and some failures. Through out this process I was reminded how much I love propagating and growing plants. I love it so much that I have a hard time saying that I have enough started and then stopping so that I don't have so many that I no idea what to do with all of the plants.

Over the next few months I will start the process of moving about 100 lavender plants from the Neosho farm to the new farm. I hope that they will make it, but we will see. Step by step the farm will be moving in a new direction over the past year. Farm workshops, U-picks, farm stand, and more is in the future, stay tuned! Let me know in the comments what kind of workshops you would like to see at the farm.
